Things My Mama Taught Me

1 comment:

  1. This assignment was probably one of the most difficult I have undertaken so far in this course. I was working on a project with my 8th grade students called "Where I'm From" which is based on George Ella Lyon's poem and work with students. I set out to do the same and create a poem and video to use as an example for my students; nevertheless, it became a video memorial to my mom.
Initially, the video was about seven minutes long, definitely too long for a public video, but, as my subject matter was so personal, it was almost physically painful to cut it to the two minutes required for the class. It really helped me understand what my students undergo when they are writing about things personal to them. I use reading-writing workshop exclusively in my classroom and was trained through New Jersey Writing Project in Texas over ten years ago; however, it is always a good reminder as a teacher to create, revise, and edit with others’ feedback. It helps me to be more aware of what students encounter when I make suggestions within their writings.
